Remedies For Severe Acne

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The common symptom of acne is inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions that erupt on the skin due to the clogging of pores or hair follicles. These lesions can be either one of comedones, papules, cysts or nodules. This problem usually occurs during puberty, when the body secretes large amounts of an oily substance called sebum. The extra sebum can block the pores, giving your skin an oily skin. The acne occurs in 3 different stages: mild, moderate and severe.

Here we take a look at severe acne.

Severe acne is defined as the presence of various comedones and pus filled pustules that reach right till your neck. The size of these pustules can be as big as 1-2cm. The other characteristic of severe acne is the presence of highly inflammatory lesions that are seen from a distance of 2.5m. Severe acne can also include Acne conglobata, sinus or cystic acne. This problem can affect anybody right from the infants to old people. It can occur anywhere on the body.

Management of severe acne: Oral medications are the best treatment for severe acne. They are prescribed by a dermatologist and should be generally taken from 6-12 months.

Medication for severe acne:
1. The first medication preferred by the dermatologist is oral Isotretinoin.
2. Along with this, you should take high doses of oral antibiotics for at least 6 months.
3. Women are given oral anti-androgens that will provide them long term cure.

Usually a dermatologist will draw up a combination treatment plan that includes Isotretinoin and antibiotics, depending on the severity of the acne. Severe acne is a serious medical problem that demands urgent medical treatment. But under any circumstances, avoid self-medication.

Prevention and Treatment of Back Acne

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Back acne is the result of sweat and perspiration. After a strenuous workout, you sweat profusely and you body produces more sebum. At the same time, your skin is irritated. Irritated skin in a warm enclosed space is ideal breeding ground for P.acnes bacteria that cause acne. Showering or rinsing your skin after a vigorous workout can be the best preventive measure against acne. If you do not have time for proper cleaning, wiping yourself with a wet towel will also help. If you are a woman, change into a fresh, dry bra after a heavy workout.

You can also take following preventive measures against back acne:

Change pillows, bed sheets and towels regularly.

Wash your clothes with gentle or sensitive detergents or fabric softeners, as harsh detergents tend to irritate your skin.

Change over to hand-held bag in lieu of a backpack.

Wear loose clothing.

Exfoliate the skin while bathing or showering using a loofah.

Treatment for Back Acne:

As the skin on the back is thicker and stronger than the facial skin, the normal facial skin care methods will not be effective. You need stronger skin care methods to treat back acne. Combining two or more treatments of facial acne is the most effective way to treat back acne. Clean the skin with a gentle exfoliant. Then apply alpha hydroxy lotion and let it dry. Then apply any acne medication containing benzoyl peroxide liberally. As benzoyl peroxide is a good bleach, take care of your clothes or bed sheets when undergoing this treatment.

Alternatively, if you are suffering from severe acne that cannot be remedied by the normal acne treatment, use Accutane. But remember that this medication has many severe side effects. So weigh the pros and cons of this treatment. Talk to your doctor before using Accutane and ask for other safer prescription drugs.
